I am often asked by clients to help them lose fat from a particular area. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but spot reduction is not possible. Performing a million and one crunches will not get you a washboard stomach. What it will do is help strengthen the muscle responsible for that movement, but it will not remove the layer of fat that’s covering the abdominal muscles. You are looking for a body fat percentage that's low enough to show the muscle definition. When you exercise your body taps into energy stores from everywhere (not just one place). Fat is lost from the entire body in an order that is predetermined by genetics. If you want to lose fat then you will need to create a calorie deficit, which can be done through good nutrition and the correct form of exercise. You will eventually lose fat from the body part you were initially hoping to. In terms of exercise you should combine high intensity interval training and weight training. This will increase the lean muscle mass and it will increase your metabolic rate. If you have any questions on the above please do not hesitate to contact me.
