Practice makes perfect...

I'm sure that we have all heard the expression "practice makes perfect" right? It has been drummed into our heads ever since we were kids! If you practice enough... you can learn and become adept at a new skill. Some studies have indicated that 10,000 hours of practice is what's required. This is not entirely accurate as only perfect (deliberate) practice makes perfect. It's not just the amount of time spent practicing but the quality of it. This applies to everything in life but let's focus on movement and performance. When you perform a skill and you repeat it over a period of time, it creates new neural pathways within your central nervous system. It strengthens your mind body connection and it becomes habitual (auto pilot), but it's deposited into the "memory bank" whether it's right or wrong.
We need to be constantly assessing what we're doing in order to improve. How often have you been to the gym and just gone through the motions, or rushed through it because you had other things you needed to get done? If you're not doing it right then you will not get anything from it.
It will further ingrain incorrect recruitment patterns which becomes harder to change. My advice would be to focus on the basics and hammer down the details. You should take the time to avoid bad habits which lead to overload and injury. It always helps to have someone else cast an eye to check posture and technique. If you are interested in personal training please do not hesitate to get in touch.
